How is the season? What are we expecting? Well, the crop is small, compared to most years, but overall the quality looks good.
One can never say what the wine will be like with surety until the ripening season is finished and the grapes are safely fermented into wine. Even after that, barrel time and bottle aging time can deliver some surprising and unexpected results. Happily most of the time they’ve been ones we’ve been pleased with.
We love the way our 2010 vintages of Pinot Noir, Cabinet-Merlot and Shiraz have developed and are drinking at 7 years of age. These are all up for tasting and purchase at the Cellar door. We make a point of never releasing our reds too young as we have quite a tannin load in our young reds, which can make them unapproachable early on, but which allows them to develop into very elegant aged wines later on. With a higher tannin and acid initially, it means we need minimal levels of sulphur in our wines to preserve them so that they live into good old age.
The nets are going on…the worst job of the year…other than the bringing in the nets. There are going to be some disappointed hungry birds as a consequence, but we don’t have enough grapes to share. Before we know it vintage will be upon us and the place will be a flurry of activity with pickers, tractors, crusher and de-stemmers all in motion. Then fermenting, pressing and getting it all into barrels with a lot of red stuff to clean up along the way.
We will take a breather to welcome you up on weekends and public holidays, to taste the products of our labours. Its not a bad idea to book for groups of over 4, especially if you want to eat as well as taste!
See you soon.
